The project aims to explore the ability of cell therapy to cure T1D in 3 concomitant stages: blocking diabetic autoimmunity, restoring self-tolerance and reinstating insulin production capacity.

Restoring immune homeostasis and tissue regeneration are targeted through three major objectives which all use mesenchymal stromal cells as the main therapeutic tool: killing the autoreactive cells, induction of the hematopoietic chimerism, and pancreatic regeneration through neogenesis of new endocrine cells from the stem cells.

The specific objectives designed to accomplish the scientific objective are:

1. Arrest of inflammatory insulitis by immunomodulation with killer MSC;

2: Abrogation of autoimmunity using repeated killer MSC infusions;

3: Indefinite restoration of self-tolerance through hematopoietic chimerism.

During more than 40-year experience in the field of cardiovascular diseases and having an experience of more than 15 years in the field of stem cell biology, the Institute of Cellular Biology and Pathology “Nicolae Simionescu” has brought outstanding contributions to the deciphering of the mechanisms involved in diverse cardiovascular pathologies and development of sustainable cellular therapies.

The accumulated expertise and the existing infrastructure allowed the engagement into this ambitious and powerful impact project, which could open new possibilities for finding an effective treatment solution for type 1 diabetes.

To this end, Dr. Nadir Askenasy, a specialist with advanced skills in the field of autoimmune diabetes and immunological disorders, has joined the IBPC initiative to begin developing a pragmatic approach to cure type 1 diabetes.
